HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION
PRESERVATION SPECIALIST REPORT
March 1.7, 2014. .
Hello Commission!
As always I like to begin with;the updates ori the Restore Michiana Workshops
Series. We had approximately, 16'folkat the March 8th Power Tools Event at the Birdsell
Mansion. It was well received and..our expert, Jeff bierbeck and his carpenter Bob were
excellent. We were able to take a,tour, bf that wbndedul property, make our simple
coat/hat racks and eat lunch all, wit'h an hour to spare! Wvwill.'definitely be doing another
program in the same vein next year! Perhaps a standing coat r#k. made from reclaimed
lumber?
Many of you may have seen all the great press and mention we received from the
Spring Forward Project. To be exact two different television 'interviews and the, front '
page of the newspaper. (My publicist will be handling the money for my autograph) We
now have documented proof that I do actually.do'things. (Ju§f kidding) On thatnote, I
wanted to thank each of you that, attended the meeting with the:deputy mayor, obviously I
was cutting and painting wood. This department 'does'so inany things that most do not
realize. I'm keeping my fingers crossed so that we'will be able to do.even more.
Last week I was able to give a tour to the: University of Michigan students that
were in town helping out the Unity Gardens ag part of theā€¢Spring Break Anywhere
program. There were 18 students who braved the cold and wind with me to discover
some of the architectural quality and history of South Bend. (Story about these students
in Sunday's Tribune)
Looking forward:
-April 9-11 we will be attending the Indiana Statewide Conference in New Albany, IN
-April 16 Restore Michiana Primer on Plants workshop at Ginger Valley in Granger
-April 26 NNNs Adopt -a -Block. I would love toy see some representation from HPC on
this. Wayne Doolittle has done this for years and I plan on attending and would like a
commissioner or two with me! Two of our districts are in NNN!
-May 1 Southhold Awards at Kiser House
-May 2 Studebaker-Bendix Heritage bus tours with Studebaker National Museum and the
Convention and Visitors Bureau. We will be making stops at St Paul's and Building 84. I
will be guiding portions of the tour. Also there will be a Drivers'. Club car cruise and
show on Michigan St as well as Catherine's First Friday's Architectural walking tour
through downtown.
Thank you,
Steve Szaday
Preservation Specialist
