HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION
PRESERVATION SPECIALIST REPORT
July 21, 2014
Hello Commission!
Now if we can just get through summer without more wind storms or mini- .
tornadoes or whatever they wish to call it, we should be okay. We saw a lot of damage
done by trees and even gutters and shingles ripped right off of houses. Not one district
escaped at least one tree downed. Some of our prized spots such as Tippecanoe suffered
several trees uprooted and sidewalks in shambles. Restoration work continues on a
number of houses throughout the districts and at Iocal`landmarks.
Speaking of restoration work; Holy Cow there is someone working on the
People's church on our block. Amazing! Kudos to` Catherine for her numerous pleas with
code enforcement to have the property attended to. We -know that the storms caused
dozens of slate roof tiles to be blown into thq street, sidewalks, and parking lots. Also
next door to that the Dean Building has finally been secured and has been awarded a
successful bid in the tax sale. Timewill tell. We kh6w from the SBPD that in June
several of the cast iron radiators have been stolen from the property. although the
culprits have been apprehended, not :all of the radiators'weie as lucky.
I have turned into code an additional 18 prdperties'since the last meeting. As
previously mentioned we were allowing some time to get things in order after the
- devastating storms. We are not going" to worry about grass height while a tree rests in
your master bedroom. There were gome properties whose time -had come to be turned in.
We are pleased with the work being done at the Portage Apartment Buildings by
Magmile Properties. The demolition anti reroofing are complete. Approximately 90% of
the windows will be restored. There are some issues witfi.egress.windows in two
apartments that will not allow the original windows to be used. The original doorways
and trim have been reused as available.
We still have some issued that are in need of letters from legal:
307 Lamont -Bradley Management/Tim Johnson. Highly visible by Memorial Hospital,
no activity since last fall, Code period for repairs expired
65014 US 31 South -Country Bake Shop an eyesore and the greatest argument against
preservation in our county
841 Park -Cole Hay -he has 7 days before the COA from last year expires, nothing done
Since his meeting last July
On a happier note, I had 40 folks for the Studebaker National Museum walking
tour of Downtown South Bend. We also had about 40 folks from the Mendoza School of
lBusiness at Notre Dame for a staff outing and walking tour.
Thank you,
Steve Szaday-Preservation Specialist HPCSBSJC
