CERTIFICATE OF APPROPRIATENESS <br />1. 13271 Adams Road COA#2013-1107A Landmark <br />Representation by Mike Wheeler, owner <br />STAFF REPORT <br />CONCERNING APPLICATION FOR A <br />CERTIFICATE OF APPROPRIATENESS <br />Date: 7 November 2013 <br />Application Number: 2013-1107A <br />Property Location: 13271 Adams Road <br />Architectural Style/Date/Architect or Builder: 1871/Italianate style applied to a 3 -bay I-house/Joseph Singer, builder <br />Property Owner: Michael Wheeler <br />Landmark or District Designation: Local Landmark <br />Rating: Outstanding <br />DESCRIPTION OF STRUCTURE/ SITE: The red brick 2 %z storey Italianate has a solid stone foundation. The windows <br />have segmental brick arches and segmented window frames, double hung 2/2 and 2/1, with fixed transoms on the second floor. <br />The gable roof has asphalt shingles deep cornices with brackets and dentil moulding. The front porch is open with turned posts <br />and a concrete stoop. The Cherry Road porch has square posts with brackets and a wide dentil frieze with brackets. There is a <br />west side rear one storey ell with French Doors. There is a large English Barn north of the house with vertical wood siding and a <br />steel roof. The west side has three louvered vents and two modern sliding windows. The south side has what appear to be <br />original sliding doors and a modern door with multiple panes and a pressure treated wood deck and pergola; there is a modern <br />garage door at the cast end. The East side has two louvered vents and two fixed 6 paned windows and what appears to have been <br />an entry that is now permanently sealed. The North side also has an entry that has been sealed with modem material. <br />ALTERATIONS: The roofing materials are not original to the house (COA 2009-0821). The French doors, new siding on the ell <br />were approved with COA#2001-0713-1.5 Pine trees and 2 Walnut trees were removed in the right of way for a utility upgrade <br />with COA 2007-0501. The English Barn has a number of modem additions in the windows and openings; the deck with the <br />pergola and the steel roof. <br />APPLICATION ITEMS: Cover exposed wood with similar color of vertical steel panels. <br />DESCRIPTION OF PROPOSED PROJECT. The homeowner will cover the surface of the barn with vertical steel panels <br />resembling barn siding to make the structure weather -tight. This is standard stock ribbed steel sheeting.(See attached photo) The <br />large sliding doors will also be covered. The panels will be affixed directly to the wood siding with screws. The original <br />louvered vents will not be covered. The interior of the barn is insulated and paneled with knotty pine. It is a work shop and can <br />accommodate 4 cars. <br />STANDARDS AND GUIDELINES: <br />The Commission has the authority to determine the architectural merits and the extent of any proposed treatment, renovation, or <br />addition to a historic landmark. The commission will require drawings, plans, specifications, and/or samples where appropriate. <br />A. Maintenance <br />The maintenance of any historical structure or site shall in no way involve any direct physical change except for the general <br />cleaning and upkeep of the landmark. The Commission shall encourage the proper maintenance of all structure or sites. <br />B. Treatment <br />
