Historic Preservation Commission
President's Report — September 17th, 2012
• 08/20/2012 7:OOP: HPC Monthly Meeting (Rm 1308).
08/24/2012 3:OOP: Staff Meeting. Reports of falling debris from the Avon
Theater (eastern fagade cap) prompted an investigation by HPC staff. They were
met by several parties at the building site. It was relayed that a DTSB
representative discovered a building fragment while walking along the sidewalk
and reported it to the SJCP Library. City of South Bend was notified, prompting a
quarantine of the walkway as a safety precaution (Art Beat scheduled 8/25).
I met with Catherine and Elicia to discuss their findings. A review of pictures of
this somewhat large, solitary and seemingly intact terra-cotta fragment seemed to
defy any predictable expectations of material shattering through impact (over two
stories elevation). It was unknown to staff if any impact markings were present on
the sidewalk. Logic would seem to suggest that the block floated or was carried
from the top of the building to the ground.
Catherine accompanied me back to the site for additional investigation.
Additional photographs of the ground were taken. No damage (cracks/divots) to
concrete could be seen. No dust, fragment particles detected on any of the
sidewalk/parking lot in the vicinity.
09/12/2012 4:15P: Staff Meeting. Brought my latest creation - a working, double -
hung window presentation model. Proto-type built to be a full function,
interactive, easily transportable aid to convey mechanical concepts and
recommended maintenance procedures for wood windows. Staff provided
favorable comments along with a request to bring to the unit to the Wood
Windows Video Premier event scheduled for 9/13 6P at the Kiser House.
• 09/13/2012 6:OOP: Kiser House. Restore Michiana — Preservation and
Maintenance of Wood Windows. Preview of the video series: The How & Why to
Preserve Wood Windows and Open House Tour of the Kiser Mansion. Co-
sponsored by Indiana Landmarks and the Historic Preservation Commission of
South Bend & St. Joseph County with special guest, Richard Spigelmyer. Great
turnout! Excellent outreach opportunity.
