Written description of project at 717 Forest Avenue:
The changes described below are illustrated on the included before/after sketch. 1 am also including
supporting images for each specific proposed modification.
1. Scalloped Shingles:
On its side (north -facing) gable, the house has scalloped (fish scale) shingles. But the front gable (the
east -facing gable, facing the street) does not have scalloped shingles. Neighbors tell me that the house
originally had scalloped shingles on the front gable. I would like to add scalloped shingles to the front
gable. This is a historically -appropriate change because I would be using shingles that match the existing
shingles on the side gable. It would also blend nicely into the neighborhood because many of the
nearby houses (including one immediately -adjacent) have scalloped shingles in their front gables.
Please see Image #1 for a picture of the shingles on the side gable.
2. Gable ornament:
I would also like to add a wooden gable ornament. I do not know if this house originally had a gable
ornament but many of the houses in the neighborhood have them. I have selected a period -appropriate
design. Please see Image #2 for a picture of the proposed gable ornament.
3. Brackets:
I would like to add a decorative wooden bracket (matching the gable ornament) to the overhang on the
north-east corner of the house. Several nearby houses have brackets in equivalent overhangs.) would
like to add the same bracket to the porch. Please see Image # 3.
4. Windows:
The windows in the lower -level front room (east -facing) were originally much taller. I can tell this from
the patched siding outside and patched wall inside. I would like to restore the windows to their original
dimension and probable appearance. This change would return the house to its original design and
would make it look more consistent with neighboring houses (including one immediately -adjacent). I
plan to use windows from the Pella Architect series. These have a wood exterior and general
appearance that is consistent with the period of the house. Please see Image #4a (center window) and
Image #4b (side windows).
