STAFF REPORT <br />CONCERNING APPLICATION FOR A <br />CERTIFICATE OF APPROPRIATENESS <br />Date: August 3, 2011 <br />Application Number: 2011 -0803 <br />Property Location: 1340 East Wayne Street South <br />Architectural Style/Date /Architect or Builder: Renaissance Revival/1929 <br />- Property Owner: - -John and -Ellen Stolte - — - <br />Landmark or District Designation: East Wayne Street LHD <br />Rating: Contributing <br />DESCRIPTION OF STRUCTURE/ SITE: The structure is a two- storey frame <br />construction with an irregular plan and brick fagade. The hip roof has a wide overhang, <br />supported by large brackets and is covered in asbestos shingles. The first storey has <br />grouped casement windows with concrete sills. The second storey has 6/1 double hung <br />windows with brick header course sills and soldier brick. The entryway is a central brick <br />arch with stone keystones and irregularly located quoins. <br />ALTERATIONS: None recorded. <br />APPLICATION ITEMS: Tear off and re -roof. Going from asbestos shingle to 25 year <br />3 -tab. Maple red. <br />DESCRIPTION OF PROPOSED PROJECT: The roof appears to be the original <br />asbestos shingles and is currently covered in a green moss. The owner reports that the <br />roof is leaking. Contractor for the owner has proposed a tear off and re -roof from the <br />existing asbestos to 3 -tab asphalt of a similar reddish color. <br />STANDARDS AND GUIDELINES: East Wayne Street Local Historic District <br />II. EXISTING STRUCTURES <br />B. ROOFS AND ROOFING <br />Roof shapes in the district encompass most of the various designs found in residential <br />structures. Roofs are covered with a variety of materials such as asphalt, asbestos, wood, <br />and slate shingles, as well as clay tiles. Residences in most cases have wood fascias with <br />gutters and downspouts. The fascias of some vinyl or metal sided houses are covered <br />with the same material. <br />Required <br />The existing shape and materials of the roof shall be retained. All architectural features <br />which give the roof its essential character shall be retained, including dormer windows, <br />cupolas, cornices, brackets, chimneys, cresting and weather vanes. <br />Recommended <br />Whenever possible, the original shape and materials of the roof shall be restored. <br />Particular effort should be made to retain materials such as slate, tile, and other unique <br />materials not. commonly found in new construction.
