The root ball can dry out in a few days though surrounding soils remain moist. <br />Studies have show that height growth of transplanted trees may triple if a turf free area as small as 2ft by 2ft is left around the base. If the turf free area is approximately <br />90ft by 20ft, the height growth may increase by as much as six times the height of the same tree with turf growing up to the base of the tree. <br />A transplanted tree takes about one year for every inch of trunk diameter. A smaller tree will establish quickly and grow rapidley enough to catch up to a larger tree, <br />which struggles longer to replace its larger root system and grows slowly. <br />Research has shown that an 811t circle of mulch property applied under young trees can quadruple tree root densities when compared young trees growing with turfgr,ss <br />I' competition and no mulch. <br />
