Original doors, windows and hardware shall not be discarded when they can be restored and reused in place. New
window and door openings which would alter the scale and proportion of the building shall not be introduced.
Inappropriate new window and door features, such as aluminum insulating glass combinations that require removal
of the original windows and doors, shall not be installed.
Not Recommended
Awnings, hoods, and fake shutters made of metal, vinyl, or fiberglass should not be used if they would detract from
the existing character or appearance of the building.
STAFF RECOMMENDATION: The on -sight exterior inspection by Staff and the Preservation
Specialist were unable to determine if all of the windows were in as bad of a state of disrepair as the west
bedroom. Champion has provided pictures of the interior rather than have Staff disturb his wife who is
convalescing. With the exception of window in the attic, it appears from the pictures provided that the
windows are not deteriorated beyond repair and could be repaired, per Preservation Specialist. Regarding
the closet window, Champion Windows does make a double hung window with "obscure glass" that may
be an option for the closet if it is not cost prohibitive rather than glass block. There is very little of the
original fabric of this house remaining, windows have been altered and vinyl windows have already been
installed at various locations throughout the structure. If vinyl windows are approved for this home then
staff would recommend reconsideration of the "Contributing" rating for this house in the Riverside
District. Staff recommends replacement of third storey window and repair of other original windows.
