STAFF REPORT <br />CONCERNING APPLICATION FOR A <br />CERTIFICATE OF APPROPRIATENESS <br />Date: July 23, 2010 <br />Application Number: 2010_ -0720 <br />Property Location: 818 Leland <br />Architectural Style/Date /Architect or Builder: 1899/Free Classic <br />Property Owner: John R. Hayden and Abigail L. Palko <br />Landmark or District Designation: Chapin Park LHD <br />Rating: Omitted in 2005 Survey <br />DESCRIPTION OF STRUCTURE/ SITE: This is a two storey home with an <br />irregular plan set upon a brick foundation. The walls are wood clapboard on the first <br />storey with wood shingle on the second storey and in the gable. The roof is cross gable <br />with cornice returns and a dormer which breaks the roof line on wing. The roof is <br />covered with dimensional asphalt shingles. The windows are 1/1 double hung with <br />moulded entablatures. There is a corner porch between the central gable and wing with <br />square wood supports on brick piers with a simple balustrade and moulded cornice. <br />ALTERATIONS: The home was restored to a single family residence from three <br />apartments; and completely rehabbed inside and outside with the removal of all non- <br />contributing additions and alterations. There was 4x8 2008 addition to create an new rear <br />entry and a redesign of the back hip roof to accommodate the addition. The east side <br />windows were reconfigured to two shorter double windows, the bathroom window was <br />removed and replaced with a higher window. Three square windows were installed in the <br />north wall of the dining room and the kitchen window on the north wall was shortened. <br />Glass bock was installed in the basement windows. <br />APPLICATION ITEMS: Constructing a pre- fabricated storage shed. Please see <br />attached documentation with letter <br />DISCRIPTION OF PROPOSED PROJECT: The homeowners wish to place a <br />prefabricated "Rubbermaid Roughneck resin storage building, 7x7x7 at the rear of their <br />property per site plan and photographs submitted. It will be free standing. <br />STANDARDS AND GUIDELINES: <br />Chapin Park Local Historic District Guidebook <br />C. SHEDS AND ACCESSORY BUILDINGS <br />Required <br />Sheds and accessory structures (gazebos, decks, doghouses, playhouses, fountains and small <br />reflecting pools, outdoor sculpture, children's play equipment, etc.) shall be located at the rear of <br />the property and as unobtrusively as possible while preserving historical relationships between <br />the buildings, landscape features and open spaces. Proportions and materials shall conform to <br />those required for new construction. <br />Recommended <br />Accessory building designs should be compatible in character and mood to the residence and the <br />neighborhood. <br />Prohibited <br />Prefabricated metal sheds shall not be used. <br />
