STAFF REPORT <br />CONCERNING APPLICATION FOR A <br />CERTIFICATE OF APPROPRIATENESS <br />Date: April 1, 2010 <br />Application Number: <br />Property Location: <br />Architectural Style/Ds <br />Property Owner: <br />District Designation: <br />Rating: <br />2010 -0331 <br />411 West North Shore Drive <br />tte /Architect or Builder: Colonial Revivial/1938/William Reinke <br />Lucille and Robert Jones <br />West North Shore <br />Non - Contributing <br />DESCRIPTION OF STRUCTURE/ SITE: The Colonial Revival home has a rectangular plan with appendages <br />set on a concrete foundation. The walls are wood frame with aluminum siding. The steep gabled roof has asphalt <br />shingles. The porch has 2 support columns, a flat to slightly sloped roof and flat decorated entablatures. There is a <br />balcony on the west side with post and lintel railing with X crossings over an enclosed porch. The chimney <br />protrudes on the west wall and is constructed with regular bond brick painted white. The windows are double hung <br />3/3 with shutters. <br />ALTERATIONS: The aluminum siding has been replaced with vinyl siding. There is a one storey <br />addition and deck at the rear of the home. All of the windows at the rear and half of the east side have <br />been replaced and have replacement storms. The rest of the windows appear to be original to the house <br />and have replacement storms. The door appears to be original with a replacement storm door. <br />APPLICATION ITEMS: Repair deteriorated chimney by removing damaged top portion and replacing; <br />repair deteriorated bricks /mortar throughout. Will restore to same height/configuration and repaint white. <br />DESCRIPTION OF PROPOSED PROJECT: The homeowner wishes to remove the courses of deteriorating <br />brick from the severely damaged chimney. These original bricks are common, unglazed and then painted white. <br />The current chimney cap is believed to have been formed from excess mortar; it is cracked and is contributing to <br />the deterioration to the bricks. The homeowner also wishes to replace all deteriorating brick throughout the <br />chimney, the chimney to its original height using new brick and mortar that closely matches the dimensions <br />of the original brick with mortar and then re -paint it white. The new poured concrete chimney cap will be installed <br />and the chimney caps will be replaced on all three flues. <br />STANDARDS AND GUIDELINES: <br />II. BASIC STRUCTURAL MATERIAL <br />AND ARCHITECTURAL FEATURES <br />Preferred: Retain and maintain the original exterior building material. <br />Frame Structures: Repair, repaint, and/or clean siding to deter deterioration. <br />Masonry Structures: Tuck -point brick and stone, repair stucco and repaint trim, stucco and brick (if painted) to <br />deter deterioration. Retain and maintain architectural detail of structures such as wrought iron, tile, brackets, etc., or <br />replace when necessary with similar material in texture, size and appearance. <br />Permitted: If vinyl or aluminum siding is the only economic solution to a deteriorating frame house, architectural <br />detail must be visually preserved. The siding used should match the original in style, width, and lap as closely as <br />.possible. <br />Prohibited: Do not use asbestos or asphalt siding on frame structures. Do not use artificial brick or cast stone <br />siding on brick, masonry, stucco, or frame structures. Do not sandblast or use harsh detergents in cleaning brick, <br />masonry or stucco. <br />
