Color identification by Munsell notation was limited to paint layers representing the fust -- decorative -treatment. - The identified paint layers were prepared under the microscope by removing subsequent paint layers and visible surface deterioration with asurgeon scalpel. The paint samples were exposed to ultraviolet light for a limited period to reverse any darkening due to being over -painted. Oil based coatings have a tendency to darken and yellow when not exposed to daylight for extended periods. Color identification was done under natural daylight and controlled color corrected artificial light' and visually matching samples to the Munsell Color System=. Identified colors are named according to the National Bureau of Standards, Color, Universal Language and Dictionary of Color Names, U.S. Dept. of Commerce, NBS Publication 440. The Munsell Color System consists of 1600 different colors of opaque pigmented films on cast - coated paper. Munsell Color System identifies color numerically, in terms of three attributes: Hue (color), Value (dark 2 to light 9) and Chroma (gray 1 to bright 14).
