Wayne Street LHD <br />Rating: Contributing <br />DESCRIPTION OF STRUCTURE/ SITE: This is a two storey frame Colonial Revival home with a <br />rectangular plan, flared gable asphalt shingle roof with three gable inset dormers at the front. The porch <br />roof extended from the main roof supported by square box columns with mold trim as capital. There is a <br />central entry with sidelights. There is a two car garage wing with two doors with molded trim cornice, <br />wood balustrade on the flat roof. All of the windows and doors appear to be original. <br />ALTERATIONS : Enclosed arched area at rear garage was noted on survey card. <br />APPLICATION ITEMS: Removal of 4 non -conforming pine trees (3 Blue Spruce/1 Fir)[See Exhibit <br />A&B] which obscure the view of the house from the street(Exhibit C) and impede the growth of <br />lawn/grass (large portion of yard). Addition of (1 or 2) new deciduous trees within tree lawn along <br />Twyckenham Drive (Exhibit D) <br />DESCRIPTION OF PROPOSED PROJECT: The homeowners wish to remove the four trees directly <br />in front of their home and replace them with a maple tree in the tree lawn. The maple trees recommended <br />for tree lawns for the East Wayne Street District are the Norway Maple and Sugar Maple. The spruce <br />trees were less than 6 feet tall in March 1987 when the survey photograph of the home was taken for the <br />original survey card. Brent Thompson, City Forester, submitted an e-mail after visiting the site (Exhibit <br />E) stating that the spruce trees are healthy but could be trimmed up or replaced. <br />STANDARDS AND GUIDELINES: <br />I. THE ENVIRONMENT <br />A. THE DISTRICT ENVIRONMENT <br />The district is characterized by its proximity to downtown South Bend. It encompasses several <br />blocks of East Wayne Street, North and South, from Eddy Street east to Greenlawn and the south <br />side of Jefferson Boulevard from Eddy Street east to Sunnyside Avenue. The district is bounded on <br />the north by Jefferson Boulevard from Eddy Street to Sunnyside Avenue and then by the north <br />property lines of the Wayne Street properties to Greenlawn. The south boundary is the southern <br />right of way of the alley or the southern property lines of East Wayne Street, South. Unique features <br />of the neighborhood include the island of homes between East Wayne Street North and East Wayne <br />Street South, the parks at each end of the island, and the brick pillars at the entrance way (Eddy <br />Street) to the subdivision with signage reading "Whitcomb and Keller's Sunnymede." <br />Definition - the term "trees" in the following <br />standards shall be defined as <br />follows: <br />
