STAFF REPORT <br />CONCERNING APPLICATION FOR A <br />CERTIFICATE OF APPROPRIATENESS <br />Date: November 5. 2008 <br />Application Number: 2008-1030 <br />Property Location: 611 Edgewater <br />Architectural Style/Date/Architect or Builder: Colonial Revival/1924/Whitcomb & Keller <br />Property Owner: Laura Mallozzi <br />Landmark or District Designation: Edgewater Place L.H.D. <br />Rating: Contributing <br />DESCRIPTION OF STRUCTURE/ SITE: 611 Edgewater is a two storey Colonial Revival home with <br />a rectangular floor plan set on a brick foundation. The walls are wood shingles and the gabled roof has <br />asphalt shingles.. There is an enclosed front porch with narrow single pane windows; the windows on the <br />house are double hung with aluminum storms windows. <br />ALTERATIONS.: The front porch was enclosed with a bank of windows above the knee wall. There <br />are replacement storm windows. A new front storm door, replacement gutters and foundation re -pointing. <br />were approved by the Commission in February, 2004. In April, 1982 the Commission approved a new <br />fiberglass shingled roof. The window shutters noted on the 1985 survey card have been removed. <br />APLICATION ITEMS: New siding and windows for lead abatement. <br />DESCRIPTION OF PROPOSED PROJECT: The homeowner wished to replace some of the <br />windows in the home with vinyl replacement windows. The exterior of the home will be resurfaced with l <br />Pelican Bay One Ultra -Premium Shake and Scallop Siding with vinyl Hand Split shakes to match the <br />original. The vinyl shakes will be installed over the original wood shakes. The home owner has also <br />submitted the results from the lead testing of the exterior of the house. <br />STANDARDS AND GUIDELINES: <br />II. EXISTING STRUCTURES <br />A. BUILDING MATERIALS <br />Original exterior wall materials in the District range from brick, clapboard, shingles, and masonry <br />block to aluminum siding. In the majority of the cases the aluminum siding has been applied over <br />the original clapboard. There are some masonry commercial buildings on Lincolnway. <br />Required <br />Existing exterior building materials shall be retained. Deterioration of wood materials shall be prevented <br />through repair., cleaning, and painting. The existing architectural detail around windows, <br />porches, doors, and eaves should be retained or replaced by replicas of the same design and materials <br />when deteriorated beyond repair. <br />Masonry structures shall be maintained, tuck -pointed and properly cleaned when necessary. <br />Masonry shall be cleaned only when necessary to halt deterioration or to remove stains, and shall be <br />done with the gentlest method possible, such as low pressure water and soft natural bristle brushes. <br />Stucco surfaces shall be maintained by cleaning and repainted when necessary. When repairing <br />stucco a stucco mixture shall be used. <br />Recommended <br />Whenever possible, the original building materials should be restored. Aluminum or vinyl siding may be used when <br />it is the only feasible alternative to maintaining the original surface material. When used over wood surfaces, this <br />siding should be the same size and style as the original wood. However it must be noted that such material can <br />contribute to the deterioration of the structure from moisture and insects. Mortar joints should be repointed only <br />
