STAFF, REPORT <br />CONCERNING PPLICATION FOR A <br />CERTIFICATE OF APPROPRIATENESS <br />Date: July 9, 2008 <br />Application Number: 2008-0708 <br />Property Location: 805 Bronson <br />Property Owner: Elizabeth and Ron Farr <br />Landmark or District Designation: Edgewater_ Place LHD <br />Rating: Contributing <br />STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE/HISTORIC CONTEXT: This 1912 Free Classic was built by <br />Whitcomb and Keller Corporation as a rental and sold to Ralph and Bernice Heick in 1921. They sold the <br />house a year later to Joseph Heick but they continued to live in the house until 1938. Eventually the <br />property fell into the hands of the Home Owners Loan Company who sold it to Clarence. Thomas in 1942. <br />Mr. Thomas was a private truck owner for the Brodbeck Trucking Company. It was sold to Henry and <br />Marie Sloan in 1944. The Sloans owned the Rino Bar. <br />APPLICATION ITEMS: Install new concrete ramp for handicap accessibility. Location -east side of House <br />per drawing submitted. Exhibit A <br />EDGEWATER PLACE STANDARDS, D. Entrances, Porches and Steps: The majority of the houses in <br />the district have either an open or an enclosed porch across the front or on the side. Most porches have either <br />gabled or hipped roofs or are covered by the main roof of the house. A brick base with wood columns is <br />common. Required: Existing or original porches and steps, including handrails, balusters, columns, <br />brackets... shall be retained or replaced with replicas....Porches and additions reflecting later architectural <br />styles and which are important to the building's historical integrity shall be retained. <br />RECOMMENDATION: The side porch at 805 Bronson is located less than four feet from the property line <br />and the neighbor's picket fence. The pipe railing is not original to the house, The owner proposes a solid <br />concrete ramp with railings along the entire side of the house to the sidewalk for handicapped accessibility <br />along this narrow and difficult to maintain space. Exhibit B,Staff recommends approval. <br />
