Wood storm windows and doors painted or finished to match the original should be used but
should not damage existing frames. If new sashes or doors are installed, the existing or original
materials, design and hardware should be used. When metal storm doors are used, they should be
painted, anodized or coated to match the existing. When awnings are used, they should be of canvas
material.
Prohibited
Original doors, windows and hardware shall
not be discarded when they can be restored and
reused in place. New window and door openings,
which would alter the scale and proportion
of the building may not be introduced.
Inappropriate new window and door features
such as metal, vinyl or fiberglass awnings,
hoods or aluminum insulating glass combinations
that require removal of original windows
and doors, shall not be installed.
Not Recommended
Fake shutters that would
detract from the existing
character or appearance of
the building should not be
used.
GROUP B LANDMARK STANDARDS B. Treatment: Treatment shall be defined as any change of
surface materials that will not alter the style or original form. Such improvements include reproofing, glazing,
or landscaping lawns and may involve a change that can potentially enhance or detract from the character of
the landmark. A treatment change of any surface whether on the landmark or in its environment may require a
Certificate of Appropriateness if it significantly alters the appearance of the landmark. Although these kinds of
changes may not require a Building Permit, a Certificate of Appropriateness may be necessary. The
commission should review the proposed treatment for character and style consistency with the original
surfaces.
RECOMMENDATION: The "tilt pac" replacement sashes was one of the options that some
Commissioners thought would be a less invasive and more acceptable alternative to a complete window
replacement. Staff recommends approval because the "tilt pac" sashes will leave the original window
frame in place. Also, the original window sashes will be stored and can be restored and replaced by
future homeowners.
