STAFF REPORT <br />CONCERNING APPLICATION FOR A <br />CERTIFICATE OF APPROPRIATENESS <br />Date: August 14, 2008 <br />Application Number: 2008 -0814 <br />Property Location: 844 Forest <br />Architectural Style/Date/Architect or Builder: Gabled- Ell/1892 <br />Property Owner: Alexandra Guisinger and David Nickerson <br />Landmark or District Designation: Chapin Park LHD/NR <br />Rating: Notable <br />DESCRIPTION OF STRUCTURE/ SITE: The two storey William Sherburne House was built in 1892 <br />with an irregular floor plan . It has a brick foundations and chimney. The walls are wood clapboard with <br />corner boards. Two gables have fish -scale and un- coursed square shingles applications. The roof is a <br />cross gable with wide rakeboards and covered with asphalt shingles. There is a flat second storey rood <br />over the rear wing. The house has a small comer porch on the south side of the center gable with knee <br />braces at the comers and one turned support; the roof of the porch is an extension of the center gable rood. <br />The windows are 1/1 double hung with moulded entablatures and exterior shutters. There is a similar <br />entablature over the wood front door with three full length lights. There is a large shade tree on the south <br />side and a hip roof two stall garage at the rear of the house; one stall has original doors the other a modem <br />single door. <br />ALTERATIONS: The front porch was removed in 1949. Replacement concrete porch steps and floor. <br />The shutters appear to be of recent vintage. <br />APPLICATION ITEMS: Install new wood fence around the house and.garage per diagram.(Exhibit A) <br />and design (Exhibit B). Wood fence at rear and side of house 6 feet high from back left of house to rear. <br />(flush with garage); 4 feet high from garage side down the right side of property line, with a 4 foot high <br />access from side fence to side porch. 2. Plant a tree, preferably a flowering crabapple tree, in the south <br />(right) side of the front yard. Owners are willing to accept Commission's guidance on recommendation <br />of tree variety. <br />DESCRIPTION OF PROPOSED PROJECT: Refer to Exhibit A. Facing the house at 844 Forest: <br />there would be a 6 foot fence section at the rear left of the house which would connect to a section of 6 <br />foot fencing along the property line on the left side of the house which would continue down the property <br />line and then angle off to the right to avoid a large tree before continuing along the rear property line to <br />connect to the garage. There would be a gate (See Exhibit B) in the fence at angle to the tree to allow for <br />access to the alley. On the right side of the garage the owner proposes to install a new 4 foot gate at the <br />concrete walk between the garage_at d the new four foot fence along about 56 feet of the right property <br />line and connect to the right side of the house (Exhibit C) with another section of 4 foot fencing with a <br />gate. <br />STANDARDS AND GUIDELINES: <br />CHAPIN PARK: <br />I.
