STAFF REPORT .CONCERNING APPLICATION FOR A CERTIFICATE OF APPROPRIATENESS Date: August'9, 2007 Application Number: 2007-0806B Property Location: 508-508 % Lindsey Property Owner: NNN Landmark or District Designation: Chapin Park LHD Rating: non contributing STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE/HISTORIC CONTEXT: Bunker Young House is an American Four Square built between 1902 and 1903. Mr. Bunker was the Chief of Police for several years. - APPLICATION ITEM: Removal of aluminum siding and replace with smooth cement fiber product to match lap, width and texture of original siding. STANDARDS AND GUIDELINES: II Existing Structures A. Building Materials Original exterior building materials in the district include brick, stucco, clapboard, wood shingles and brick or stone masonry. In some instances vinyl, composite and aluminum siding have been applied over the original material Required: Original exterior building materials shall be retained when possible. Deterioration of wood materials shall be presented though repair, cleaning and painting. The existing architectural detail around windows, porches, doors and eaves shall be retained or replaced by replicas of the same design when deteriorated beyond repair.... Recommended: Whenever possible, the original building materials should be restored. When maintaining or repairing original siding is not feasible aluminum, vinyl or composite siding may be used. When used over wood surfaces, the siding should be the same size and style as the original wood. Every effort should be made to retain original trim around windows, doors, cornices, gables, eaves and other architectural features.... STAFF RECOMMENDATION: Staff can not make a recommendation since it does not know the condition of the original siding and can not make a determination at this time. Staff requests that it be allowed to work with NNN to make recommendations and return its recommendations to either the Standards and Maintenance Committee or the Commission.
