STAFF REPORT <br />CONCERNING APPLICATION FOR A <br />CERTIFICATE OF APPROPRIATENESS <br />Date: August 9, 2007 <br />Application Number: 2007-0716 <br />Property Location: 621 North Lafayette <br />Property Owner: Allyson and Aaron Hinds <br />Landmark or District Designation: Chapin Park NR/LHD <br />Rating: Notable <br />STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE/HISTORIC CONTEXT,: The Queen Anne Style House was <br />built in 1888 by Stephen Fred Brown and his wife Christina, Mr. Brown was a machinist for Strayer's <br />and eventually Studebaker. Fred Brown eventually left the house to Frederick and Vida Brown, a shaper <br />i <br />operator for Studebaker. The house stayed in the Brown family until its sale to James Quinlan in the <br />1980s. The current owners are Allyson and Aaron Hinds. <br />APPLICATION ITEM: To recreate the Original Front Porch, attach to sill -plate at base, with lean-to <br />roof until end of porch and then a full roofline fagade to create something much like the porch shown in <br />the COA illustration. The construction would be all wood. <br />STANDARDS AND GUIDELINES: II Existing Structures, D. Entrances, Porches and Steps <br />Required: When deteriorated beyond repair, existing or original porches, stoops, patios and steps <br />including handrails, balusters, columns, brackets, tiles and roof decorations shall be retained or replace by <br />replicas of the same design or by a design more in keeping with the historic period of the structure. <br />STAFF RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends approval of the concept as the project proposed <br />will replicate an original feature of the house in an appropriate period style and replace a non contributing <br />structure. <br />
