410 Manitou Place
South Bend, IN 46616
Historic Preservation Commission of South Bend and St. Joseph County
125 S. Lafayette Blvd.
South Bend, Indiana 46601
Dear Historic Preservation Commissioners,
We are currently taking bids to re -roof our house. The roofers with whom we have
spoken have asked whether they can remove the brick chimney. This chimney has no
function whatsoever, but requires upkeep. The hot water heater and furnace vent out the
side of the house.
As you can see in the enclosed photos, the chimney is not a major architectural feature of
this house, and is barely visible from many angles.
We have not yet chosen a contractor for the roof, but would like to know whether or not
we are permitted to remove the chimney. If the roofers need to repoint the bricks and do
flashing and other protections around the chimney, that will naturally add time and
expense to the estimates. If they can remove it, seal the area, and put shingles over it, it
will be more waterproof and less expensive.
Therefore, we need to know whether the removal of the chimney is an option.
We are not including specs for the roof itself. A separate application for a Certificate of
Appropriateness will be submitted for the job once we can get accurate estimates, based
on whether or not the chimney is permitted to be removed.
Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
Carol and Charles Rosenberg
