RECOMMENDATION: The 1932 Portage Township Assessor Card notes additions and modifications
throughout the 1930s and 1940s including a second story room over the back porch addition that has since
been removed. The 1987 survey card of 1515 E. Wayne Street notes the building integrity of this house as
altered -major. The entire exterior is aluminum sided with aluminum storm windows and there are very few
visible original architectural features on this house. Staff recommends approval of the replacement windows
for the deteriorated windows with the stipulation that the original windows be stored.
Hostetler: The homeowner is not here.
Patrick: Very good, and there's no builder or architect here?
Hostetler: No.
Patrick: I'll recognize any Commissioners with questions for the staff regarding this Certificate
of Appropriateness.
Klusczinski: I have one. Was our Specialist able to assess the condition of each window listed in
the proposal?
Hostetler: Yes, Wayne went out there and looked at the windows, but did not have access to the
interior.
Klusczinski: Did he make a report?
Hostetler: Just that they were sagging and that they looked pretty bad.
Ujdak: Tim, I was out there this afternoon, and he kinda walked me through it although I didn't
go in. He said that they're in pretty bad shape. The other windows have all been replaced over
time.
Klusczinski: So these are the last of the original?
Ujdak: Apparently so, yes.
Klusczinski: Oh.
Riley: The whole house is vinyl siding, you're not altering anything original.
Ujdak: No.
Klusczinski: Is it vinyl siding?
Hostetler: Aluminum.
Riley: Aluminum, sorry.
Ujdak: Well, It's been resided.
Klusczinski: Of the other windows that have been replaced already, are they vinyl clad or ...?
Ujdak: I believe that he said that they were aluminum clad.
Klusczinski: So this is a different replacement species...?
Ujdak: Oh yeah, different company, different ... He didn't say how long ago the others were
replaced, but I think that he said that there had been two sets of replacements over time. This
part of the house, that part of the house.
Patrick: Any other questions from Commissioners?
Sporleder: In the picture it seems to indicate that there are aluminum storms on the outside?
Hostetler: On some of them.
Sporleder: We are talking about these windows across the front of the house, right?
Hostetler: Yes, that's correct.
Sporleder: So what's going to happen with the aluminum storms and all that stuff? Are they
insulating glass, or are they still using storms or..?
Ujdak: As I understand it, they're still using storms.
Sporleder.I think that it would be interesting if we just had a little bit better understanding.
Ujdak: I know.
Sporleder: The description of the windows which I've read through don't seem to indicate
whether insulation glass or not ...and it does say that there is a screen that comes with it, though
it doesn't say where the screen is.
Ujdak: It's an attractive well-maintained home.
Sporleder: Certainly is.
Choitz: I wonder if it had been checked at what point the siding was put on, as far as having it in
a District.
Hostetler: It was sided when it went in.
2
