Main Street JMS Building <br />Property Owner: John Friedline <br />Landmark or District Designation: .Local Landmark in MRA National Register District <br />Rating: Outstanding <br />STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE/HISTORIC CONTEXT: The JMS building was designed by <br />noted Chicago architect, Solon Spencer Beman in 1910. It was commissioned by John Mohler <br />Studebaker to be the best office building with fireproof construction- reinforced concrete, granite, terra <br />cotta marble and fireproof tile. It was designated as a local landmark in 1998. <br />APPLICATION ITEM: Install five non - illuminated awnings per enclosed renderings. Awnings are <br />non - illuminated made with Sunbrella fabric on aluminum frame, closed ends and 6" valance per direction <br />of DRB (Downtown Design Review Board) rep., Jim Markle. The awnings will be secured by tapping <br />into pre existing aluminum tubing above the windows and not into the building. <br />STANDARDS AND GUIDELINES: B Standards: F. Signs: No neon or flashing signs will be <br />permitted unless they are original to the structure. Billboards and super - graphics will also be disallowed. <br />Only one appropriate identifying sign will be permitted per business. <br />STAFF RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends approval. The awnings will not be affixed to the <br />main structure of the building. The awnings with their logo blend in with color and design with the <br />modem portion of the fagade. <br />
