South Bend Redevelopment Commission
Regular Meeting - May 2, 1997
6. NEW BUSINESS (Cont.)
a. continued....
the largest private fundraising efforts that
has taken place in this community, at
least in the twenty years he's lived in
South Bend.
He stated that their ultimate goal is to
reach $6 million dollars by the end of
1997 or early 1998. He felt that this type
of project should be done more in the
community.
He noted that when he came to South
Bend in 1974 there was little existing in
downtown South Bend and since then
there has been a tremendous
transformation in the downtown.
Ms. Kolata noted that there are three
major components of this project. The
stage house, the auditorium and the Palais
Royale Ballroom. The first phase
includes the demolition of the current
stage inside the Morris Civic. The stage
is very narrow, as it is only 27 feet from
curtain to the back wall with little space
on either side of it. She noted that the
plan is to totally demolish the old stage
and build a new stage house. The new
stage house will be approximately 50 feet
in depth. The items that limit some of the
side space, with the construction of the
new stage, will allow for more wing
space. The stage house will be larger,
taller and deeper in depth. There will be
two loading docks for semi - trucks and a
van access drive -up. This will be a multi-
041 -6-
