WINDOW & STORM PAINTING SPECIFICATIONS
Work DescrilDtion
A) Preparation
Remove all paint from window sashes, jambs, sills and interior stools.
Remove the paint either with liquid strippers, or with heat and carbide
hand scrapers.
DO NOT DRY SCRAPE. Always mist the paint with water before
carbide scraping. Do not heat the wood excessively, or it will (over
600 degrees) produce lead fumes, or will scorch the wood. If you are
.using a standard heat gun, you do not need to heat the paint very long.
After heating the paint lightly, go on to another part.' This allows the
heated paint to cool down, making removal of the water -misted paint
easier.
Do the paint removal, except for jambs/sills/stools, either off-site or
outside the house, in the yard. Before scraping, tarp all areas on the
yard and close all windows. When removing lead-based paint, always
wear a double filtered respirator rated for lead fumes, and safety
glasses. Dispose of all paint debris according to local regulations.
B) Wood Repairs
Repair any rotted broken or cracked siding and trim with similar
wood, and/or architectural epoxies. All epoxy wood repairs can be
made with both LiquidWood & WoodEpox, which is made by
ABATRON, telephone 262-653-2000 or www.abatron.com.
Q Hand Washing
All bare wood should be hand washed with TSP and water. Use 1/4
cup of TSP for every gallon of water and scrub the wood. This should
then be rinsed with water. If outside, you can use a hose without a
spray nozzle.
D) Moisture
Before any primer or paint is put on wood, you must test the wood to
be sure the moisture content does not exceed 15%. The only way to
determine this is with a moisture meter. All house painters should
.9.
