STAFF REPORT. <br />CONCERNING APPLICATION FOR A <br />CERTIFICATE OF APPROPRIATENESS <br />Date: March 10, 2006 <br />Application Number: 2006-0227 <br />Property Location: 1029 E. Wayne <br />Property Owner: Philip Schatz <br />Landmark or District Designation: Local Landmark <br />Rating: Contributing garage of 231 S. Eddy Local Landmark <br />STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE/HISTORIC CONTEXT: The Dutch Colonial Revival design of <br />213 South Eddy and its garage located at 1029 E. Wayne Street is attributable to the firm of Austin and <br />Shambleau and was built for William C. Sibley in 1921. In 1985 the garage was converted to a residence <br />and is now a rental property. <br />APPLICATION ITEMS: To erect a garden bench /fence in the small narrow lawn in front of the apartment <br />-t oor. The bench will face the apartment door and be affixed to freestanding fence that will face the street. <br />The fence design will mimic the fence around'the nearby garden. The material will be stained wood. <br />Landmark Standards: Building Site and Landscaping: Required: ....Structures such as: gazebos.....fixed <br />garden furniture, trellises and other similar structures shall be compatible to the historic character of the site <br />...and inconspicuous when viewed from a public way. Recommended: ... Fencing should be in character with <br />the buildings style, materials and scale. <br />RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends approval. The overall design of the bench and fence is <br />compatible with the other two structures in this landmarked complex and will blend into the overall <br />appearance of its surroundings. <br />
