(E) GUIDELINE CATEGORIES <br />Guidelines for the district will address each of the Elements of Preservation individually within <br />four divisions of classification. At the time of implementation of an historic district, the <br />commission will work with the respective neighborhood association to select the desired <br />category of placement for each of the Guideline Components. These categories are as follows: <br />(el) Required <br />Defined as work which shall be done in a restoration or rehabilitation project in order to restore <br />or maintain the original or existing character of the structure or site. <br />(e2) Recommended <br />Defined as work which should be done to help restore or maintain the original or existing <br />character of the structure or site. <br />(e3) Prohibited <br />Defined as work which shall not be permitted in a restoration or rehabilitation project because <br />it may have a negative impact on the original or existing character of the structure or site. <br />(e4) Not Recommended <br />Defined as work which should not be undertaken in a restoration or rehabilitation project <br />because it may have a negative impact on the original or existing character of the structure or <br />site. <br />The chart below explains the placement of shall and should within the each of the four <br />categories in the guidelines — required, recommended, not recommended, prohibited. <br />REHABILITATION GUIDELINES <br />Required Shall <br />Recommended Should <br />Prohibited Shall not <br />Not Recommended Should not <br />Existing/ Whenever possible, original <br />Miscellaneous Retained/Maintained/ <br />Whenever possible, restored <br />Page 5 of 26 <br />
