Dormer Window MEKUS STUDIOS OBSERVATIONS The existing building is currently vacant and no longer serves the administrative needs of the cemetery. These activities are housed in the administrative office of Highland Cemetery, which Is right across the street. SITE The Gatehouse (1,2,3,4) has not been maintained and is in severe disrepair. The sidewalks around the building are cracked and have experienced differential set- tlement. The solution Is to replace the sidewalks and replace some of the asphalt paving to create positive drainage away from the building. New landscaping is needed to enhance the site. The foundation wall needs to be excavated to expose the wall for new waterproofing on the wall. The addition of drain tile would also help move water away from the basement walls. The foundation wall needs to be rebuilt underneath the low porch wall (5). As for the building, the entire skin needs to be removed and rebuilt. The stone walls are in decent condition, but all trim, slate, gutters, walls and windows need replacement, stripped down to bare structure and rebuilt. (6) Replacement of stone chimney is needed (7). The roof and building envelope is In desperate need of repair. Windows are broken and rotten (8), the stucco is cracked and significant areas of wood trim and half timber are rotten. There are numerous holes In the roof allowing the elements to the inside. BUILDING EXTERIOR The Gatehouse has stone foundation walls which are deteriorating under the porch wall (5). Additionally, the stone walls show signs of moisture Infiltration. WINDOWS All windows are simple pane glass in wood, double hung sash. Many sashes and glass panes are broken, allowing the elements to get Inside(S). All windows should be replaced with an insulating glass unit with aluminum exterior cladding in dou- ble hung configuration. .3
