danger before we go outside picking on buildings that aren't even under our control unless the
goal is to landmark. Just a thought. It's a great start though and the newsletter was awesome, it
was good to get that out it looked good and great start.
Martha Choitz: (on logos) We used one for Southhold that was particularly effective was one that
represented tiny little buildings here in town, and houses, that and artist can render. We had
every kind of building that was in town, or landmarked at that point had a representation, but it
was a very effective thing, you had to look closely to decide that's a hotel, and that's a building
and that's a house... but lots of people said, how did you get that done, who did that, how did it
happen? I probably have a copy of it, but all of our records... all of our copies and things... but
all of our big stuff is over with Pat Collins at the museum in storage. You can get it out with a
good reason. We had all different kinds of things for various things.
Lynn Patrick: Do you think that you could find that in the next week?
Martha Choitz: I don't know, I haven't thought about it in a number of years. These things could
be ... I mean, we could make new ones.
Amy Herdman: These logos that you're seeing represent what we found over and over
again ...from clicking around online to similar organizations whether other commissions, history
museums or whatever. So, what you have here are the most common themes that we saw.
Martha Choitz: They're very good... but what Todd said is true too, people really don't know that
we have... what landmarks that we have.
Todd Zeiger: Do you have any dollars that you might hire some graphic assistance?
Catherine Hostetler: We wanted to do it in house.
Todd Zeiger: Just to brainstorm some graphic ideas with you.
Catherine Hostetler: Mr. Sedlack was supposed to be working on this, but he's not done
anything. He teaches at ND, graphic arts and did the Chapin Park logos.
Mary Jane Chase: I don't know if you want to do this or not, or maybe to draw more attention,
would be to have a contest to have people submit, if you had one picture that represented South
Bend, or its history, what would you do.
Amy Herdman: We thought of something similar, and thank you for that suggestion, but when we
thought about it, more often we came up with things that we wanted avoid .... not to feature a
specific house as Todd pointed our or a specific style, we didn't want to tie to any Studebaker
reference per se, because that doesn't represent South Bend as a whole or the HPC as a whole,
so we really are treading delicately.
Lynn Patrick: You've given us a lot to think about, but I think that we should move on...
Joann Sporleder: (late arrival) I have a question I'd like to address to Counsel though with the
potential of doing cards or representations of historic structures... whether we need the
permission of the owners before we proceed with anything? We've run into that... we did maps
and did drawings and we needed to get permission from every home owner ahead of hand to
allow us to do thatfor a public distribution context. Maybe these things don't apply anymore, but
I'm just raising the issue.
Martha Choitz: That's absolutely necessary. We found that out. I mean, we never made that
mistake at Southhold, but we had to be told we should. One artist on calendars, beautiful things,
we'd done them for years ... but someone took it, and cut the thing out, and put it somewhere else.
And it was discovered that this guys picture had gone into some other kind of form. It was
nothing that we did, but this picture was now in some other form...and we got a letter, a very
strict letter from an attorney that told us that we weren't going to do that. And I simply wrote
back and said I know we're not going to do that, we didn't even know that had been done, we
didn't do it, someone else did it. You've got to be very clear or something will come up later.
Now, if you make them up that's fine. If you have an artist that will draw imaginary buildings,
why, you're in good shape. You just pay him or her.
Lynn Patrick: Another good point, and something to consider as this project unfolds. I'd like to
move on, if we're done with this, because this sounds like its still in its naecency. I'd like to move
onto the legal...
