Lafayette Blvd.
South Bend, IN 46601
Dear Commission Members,
We are submitting a Certificate of Appropriateness Application in order to do work to the
exterior of our garage and to repair our front walk and off-street parking pad as well as insert a
small retaining wall feature next to the parking area.
The Garage: The garage is located at the rear of our property. It sits on the alley but has
always had doors which faced the street. In order to access the garage there is a long narrow
driveway from the street. This driveway takes up an inordinate amount of our lot and leaves
little area for green space. We would like to leave the current garage doors in place and simply
add a single automatic door to the alley side of the building.
The Driveway: We would also like to remove the cement driveway in order to cultivate
the area of the driveway as garden space.
The Fence: We would like to run a sort piece of fencing across between our property and
that immediately to our south. We intend for this fence to be a picket fence with scalloped top
and finial decoration on the posts. It will be painted the same color as the vanilla trim on our
house. We would also like to add a matching piece of fence on the north side of our house to
give us a fully enclosed backyard.
The Re- Furbished Parkins Area: Finally, we wold like to leave a small parking area
immediately off the street in order to park one car off -street when need be. This parking area
will match our front walk and thus will have a cement interior area surrounded by a brick soldier
course laid at right angles to the cement pad. We intend to widen the parking pad 1 foot as the
current area is too narrow and cars often drive over the lawn in an attempt to access the
driveway.
The Front Walk: We are simply having the front walk way replaced in -kind with a
replica of the current walk with the exception that the cement central area of the walk will be
scored in squares to match the cement pattern on our front porch.
The Retainine Wall: We would like to add a small retaining wall to the area immediately
north of the parking pad. This feature is designed to support the lawn which is at a higher
