John James: Trained as an architect, he was <br />one of half a dozen who founded the Sydney <br />School of domestic architecture, akin to the <br />California redwood houses early last century. <br />In 1969 he began to research the history and <br />sacred meaning of Chartres cathedral, and his <br />theories have had a not inconsiderable impact <br />on our understanding of the period He was <br />particularly interested in the methods used by <br />the masons to design their buildings, and this <br />brought him into a deep understanding of <br />sacred geometry and the divine meaning of <br />numbers and fors. <br />Less than one quarter of the churches with <br />Early Gothic work had been studied, or even <br />listed Only parts of fourteen ar accurately dated <br />from the documents. In the 1980s he made a <br />three -year survey of over 3,500 churches in the <br />Paris Basin which has formed the foundation <br />for all his later reaseareb.
