Taschetta/Hughes Family
1029 Riverside Drive and 512 River Avenue
South Bend, Indiana 46616 / 406601
April 19, 2006
Historic Preservation Commission
227 W. Jefferson Street
South Bend, Indiana 46601
Dear Commissioners,
First, we would like to thank the Historic Preservation Commission for providing a
community context for recent dialogue regarding the upcoming sewer outflow repair at
the comer of Riverside and Leland. At your last meeting, various commissioners raised
thoughtful and challenging questions and decided to postpone action on the City's
application for a Certificate of Appropriateness. Indeed, while the Commission neither
approved nor denied the application it received, I feel certain that it was partially through
that dialogue and your good offices that an alternate plan was devised. If funding is
forthcoming and the new plan is executed, it is expected to provide a more long -term
solution and have a much less deleterious impact on Shetterley Park. Again, we
appreciate your support in this process.
We are also writing today to urge you to consider action or advocacy in relation to the
repair currently underway on the North Michigan Street bridge: As we understand it,
there was at one time a pedestrian underpass beneath the bridge. The restoration of this
historical feature beneath the south side of the bridge would connect Leeper Part East and
West. It would allow much easier pedestrian (and possibly bicycle) access to the area,
and would provide an important enhancement not only to the park and adjacent historic
neighborhoods, but also to the community as a whole.
Historically speaking, South Bend probably used to be more walkable in many respects
than it is'today. In the interest of Leeper Park, nearby historic neighborhoods, and the
overall "walkability" of our community, in what way or ways might the Historic
Preservation Commission advocate for such an underpass at this point?
Thanks again for your continuing good work.
Sincerely,
Rolanda L. Hughes and Joseph J. Taschetta
