October 7, 2005
Certificate of Appropriateness Application
628 Park Avenue
South Bend, IN 46616
Contacts: Cornelius Eady and Sarah Micklem, homeowners and residents
574-246-0762
email: sgmicklem@aol.com
Project Description
1. Add a semi -circular terrace in front of French doors on front of the house. Plant
boxwood, ornamental grasses and perennials to create a screen of 2-4 ft in height
around the terrace. Additional plantings to include climbing vines for the trellis
and a pair of arborvitae or other tall thin evergreens to replace original pair (one
of them removed, the other dying) against the foundation of the house. The
terrace will be approx. 15 feet wide to span the width of the French doors and 7
1/2 ft. deep. There are two options for paving the terrace.
A. Brick in basketweave pattern with narrow brick edging to match driveway
and front sidewalk, dry set. This option is more expensive than (B).
B. Flagstone terrace with edging of narrow brick.
2. Add a tree in the tree lawn to replace one cut down near the street light. We will
select a medium-sized tree from the recommended list from the city forester,
because the tree lawn is narrow and will not support a large shade tree.
3. Add a small brick sidewalk from the side door in the sunroom to the driveway,
using brick and edge bricks to match the drive.
Materials to be used for paving: brick or flagstone.
Plants to be incorporated into planting plan: ornamental grasses such as maiden grass,
existing boxwoods to be reused if possible, clematis or other vine for trellis, fastigiated
arborvitae, juniper or cedar for foundation planting, and a medium ornamental or shade
,tree.
