REPORT ON NAVARRE CABIN BY JOANN SPORLEDER
Hi Catherine and Julie,
Thanks for the note and NICH update. Don
is meeting with David at the Center for History
Facilities and Grounds committee meeting this
noon, and will note to him that I am still of the
same opinion as when we spoke.
The issues raised about the Navarre 'cabin' were
1. Stone fireplace not to be reconstructed.
Early (1890?) photos show no
exterior fireplace chimney and other Navarre
records indicate that cast iron wood -burning
stoves were most likely used,
2. Limestone piers: May or may not have
been used originally, but keeping the lower logs
off the ground will help keep them from rotting.
3. Wood floors are an interior matter and no concern of HPC
4. Daubing: Use of contemporary .
materials such as wire mesh, plastic insulation
infill and "mortar with a high cement and sand
ratio seem inconsistent with either
rehabilitation or restoration guidelines.
However, the need to make a more permanent
daubing for ease of maintenance could be allowed
in this reconstruction of the' cabin", because
the logs are to be left exposed rather than be
covered with siding as this (and most log houses)
was usually done.
5.Gable ends: Proposed framing with
siding was questioned because currently existing
structure has exposed logs in gable ends.
Meeting with David B. and Todd Z. and referencing
older photos of "cabin" continued to be
inconclusive. ( photo show horizontal siding, but
also shows furring strips on logs were siding had
been removed.) I would like to suggest
that the commission give NICH the option of
either: Use horizontal siding over framing, OR
Use logs as it currently looks, basing their
decision on the physical evidence that is
encountered as the building is dismantled; and
further, that NICH report their findings and
decision to HPC for our records.
I believe this reflects my conversation with
David Bainbridge. So in effect my
recommendation to the commission is to approve
the COA as submitted with the addition of the
alternate on the Gable ends.
Thanks, Hope this helps. Joann
>David Bainbridge just called wanting to know if
>you still were of the same opinion on the Cabin
>as when you spoke with him. Since we won't have
>your report until the day of the meeting, you
>may want to touch base with him on the Cabin
>issues•if any are posing a concern. David will
>be at the meeting on Monday evening 11/21. Also,
>Cheryl Taylor is no longer the Director at NICH.
>Catherine
