68286 Miami Road: Oriainal Owner <br />-------------------------------- <br />The following quote is taken from a local history text written by <br />Timothy E. Howard and published in 1907: "The Siefer family is <br />one of the oldest in Union township. For over half a century <br />they have been identified with the agricultural interests of <br />their community, aidinq materially in the development of the <br />resources of their section and takinq an active part in all <br />movements tending to advance its welfare." <br />George Siefer born in Alsace, France. November 2, 1822, emigrated <br />to the United States in 1852. He took up residence in <br />Elizabethtown. New Jersey, working as a tailor before lor_atino in <br />Indiana's Madison township in the year 1855, where he owned and <br />operated a farm. He bouqht land in Union townphio from valentine <br />Glassman in the year 1877 and promptly built a loq house on th? <br />Pite. which was replace in the late 1880's by the vernacular farm <br />house (a.k.a. 68286 Miami Road) that ocr.L1Dies the lot today. <br />At one point the Union township farmstead exceeded 400 acres. <br />Mr. Siefer "was widely known as th? leadinq stock dealer in (that <br />areal of St„ Joseph county."
