STAFF REPORT
CONCERNING APPLICATION FOR A
CERTIFICATE OF APPROPRIATENESS
Date: July 7, 2005
Application Number: 2005-0707
Property Location: 930 Riverside Dr. South Bend, IN
Property Owner: Shannon and Bill Brewster
Landmark or District Designation: Riverside Drive Local Historic District Chapin Park NRD
Rating: S/11
STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE/HISTORIC CONTEXT
Built in 1908 as a rental property for Jennie L. Sharples who purchased the land from Mary E. Anderson, nee
Chapin in 1901. This is a frame Queen Anne with a brick foundation.
APPLICATION ITEMS: A two-storey addition to the back of the house which faces the St. Joseph
River. Appearance will very closely match existing lines and look of the house. The extension will be 14'8"
wide and 16'8" deep. The base of the addition will be brick to match the original of the house foundation and
the siding will be the same cedar as the house and the windows will be wood. The roofing material will be the
same as roof installed on the house last summer. The computer "drawings" of the addition do not show the
gable returns which will be included in the new construction. Mr. Brad Pontius of Home Works is the
Contractor.
RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends approval. The addition is to the rear of the home and will not be
visible from the street. The Contractor and Homeowner may wish to incorporate the reuse of the two windows
and gable returns in the new construction.
