STAFF REPORT
CONCERNING APPLICATION FOR A
CERTIFICATE OF APPROPRIATENESS
Date: June 20, 2005
Application Number: 2005-0620
Property Location: 714 Forest, South Bend, IN
Property Owner: Bruno Zovich
Landmark or District Designation:
Rating: C/10
Chapin Park Local Historic District / NRD
STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE/HISTORIC CONTEXT
Samuel Coulter purchased the lots from Edward Chapin in 1889 and William Coulter in 1891. In 1891
Samuel and Nellie Coulter lived in their Folk Victorian home built in 1891 at 714 Forest until 1897.
APPLICATION ITEMS: Shave off 6 inches from edge of porch where it abuts into a tree. Ray Meyers
will be the contractor.
RECOMMENDATION: Staff does not recommend approval of this method because it destroys the
proportions of the gable of the front porch. Staff recommends that Mr. Zovich's contractor take a rectangular
notch out of the porch roof to accommodate the tree and future growth. This method will preserve the
proportions of the porch gable and allow for easier repair of the roof when the tree dies.
