STAFF REPORT
CONCERNING APPLICATION FOR A
CERTIFICATE OF APPROPRIATENESS
Date: 08/04/05
Application Number: 2005 -0804
Property Location: 943 Riverside Drive
Property Owner: Mike & Darcy O'Blenis
Landmark or District Designation: Riverside Drive Local Historic District
Rating: C /10 - American Foursquare - Jennifer Sharpies House
STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCEMISTORIC CONTEXT
This past June, the homeowners applied for a CoA for an in -kind roof replacement, which staff approved. Sadly,
the house suffered damage from a recent fire. It most likely started on the roof and occurred during the tear off of
the existing materials. The roof, some interior walls, and the rear exterior were damaged. Staff approved in -kind
reconstruction of the roof structure and dormers, the in -kind replacement of the cedar shingle and clapboard siding,
horizontal band moldings, cornice boards, crown molding, and the bell cast wall.
APPLICATION ITEMS:
Build a hipped dormer on the north (rear) slope of the roof.
Replace back door (kitchen door)
Replace burned out dormer windows, rear kitchen and bedroom windows
RECOMMENDATION
Prior to the fire the house had three hipped dormers, one on the front elevation, and one on each side
elevation. A fourth hipped dormer on the north elevation would be appropriate to the style and
construction of the house. The front dormer had paired diamond pane windows, and the side dormers
most likely had the same window type. Staff recommends approval of the construction of the rear
dormer and would recommend using the paired window design. The new window could be plain or
have muntins, and could be fixed or an awning type for increased attic air circulation.
Staff would recommend approval of paired windows for the front and side dormers. They can be
fixed or awning types left to the owner's discretion. Diamond paned windows would be preferred
for the front dormer.
The kitchen door was a glazed single leaf door of a relatively simple design. The glass pane was
rectangular, and there was also an existing storm door. Staff would recommend approval of a wood
door with a half - length light and a replacement storm door.
A few rear windows of varying sizes also need to be replaced or reconstructed. Staff would recommend
wood windows to match the pre -fire conditions. Storm windows were also present at the time of the
fire.
