1 T <br />Guidebook <br />Edgewater Place Historic District <br />639 River Avenue (contributing) Gabled Ell <br />This house was built sometime prior to 1899, possibly by William <br />H. Harper, a real estate man and building contractor. Mr. Harper <br />purchased this property and others in 1890 to plat Harper Court <br />Addition in 1893. <br />639 River Avenue (rear) (non-contributing) Vernacular <br />This house was originally constructed by William H. Harper, <br />building contractor, in 1888 as a barn for the house located at the <br />front of this lot. It is believed that the barn was converted into a <br />house around 1920. by Albert H. Ward, to increase the rent poten- <br />tial of the property. <br />647 River Avenue (contributing) Gabled Ell <br />Built in 1882 by William H. Harper, real estate man and building <br />contractor, as a real estate venture. He sold the house and other, lots <br />to Samuel Robinson in 1894. Mr. Robinson was one of South Bend's <br />successful real estate men. He rented the house out until 1901 when <br />he sold it to Willis Rogers. <br />651 River Avenue (contributing) Vernacular <br />The first story of this house was built in 1889 by William H. Harper, <br />local building contractor. He sold the house in 1892 to Oliver & <br />Catherine Brown, Oliver., was a gas maker with the Northern <br />Indiana Gas & Electric Co. After their deaths the house was sold to, <br />Victoria Smythe in 1939. Ms. Smythe added the second story to this <br />house in 1940. <br />655 River Avenue (contributing) Gabled Ell <br />Built in 1894 by George Souder, a developer, in conjunction with <br />Daniel R Roof, a carpenter. Mr. Roof lived in the house upon its <br />completion and bought it from Mr. Souder in 1900. Mr. Roof lived <br />in the house until his death in 1911, at which time it was inherited <br />by his wife, Addie. <br />Page 22 <br />
