Guidebook <br />Edgewater Place Historic District <br />510 River Avenue (non-contributing) Bungalow. <br />Built in 1920 by developers Whitcomb & Keller as a rental. They <br />rented the house in 1926 to Leos Cunningham, selling it to him in <br />1929. Mr. Cunningham was a second Lieutenant in the Army as <br />part of the Army Intelligence Corps during World War I. After the <br />war he returned to civilian life only to return to active.duty in 1936. <br />512 River Avenue (contributing) American Foursquare <br />Built in 1922 by developers Whitcomb & Keller who rented it to <br />Frank and Margaret Swonk, selling it to them in 1927. Mr. Swonk <br />was a salesman for Phoenix Manufacturing Company out of Joliet, <br />Illinois. He lived in the house until 1953 when he gave the house to <br />his daughter, Frances, a nurse. <br />513 River Avenue (contributing) Bungalow <br />Built in 1920 by developers Whitcomb & Keller for Charles D. & <br />Susan Robinson. Mr. Robinson was a machinist at the Studebaker <br />plant in Detroit for 23 years. He transferred to the plant in South <br />Bend in 1920 to become a troubleman and foreman. Mr. Robinson <br />died in 1935 leaving the house to his wife. <br />516 River Avenue (contributing) American Foursquare <br />Built in 1920 by developers Whitcomb & Keller for James & Eleanor <br />Lowry, who purchased the house in 1929. Mr. Lowry was an <br />autoworker for the Studebaker Corporation for 22 years. He <br />resided in this house until his death in 1942, after which his wife <br />moved but retained it as a rental. <br />517 River Avenue (contributing) Bungalow <br />Built . in 1921 by Louise Schiffbauer, widow of Herman <br />Schiffbauer. Mrs. Schiffbauer was a dressmaker. She resided in the <br />house until 1947 when she sold it to Dr. Clinton P. Walker, a local <br />dentist. Dr. Walker used the house as a rental. until 1955 when he <br />sold it to Robert M. Clark. - <br />520 River Avenue (contributing) Craftsman <br />Built in 1923 by developers Whitcomb & Keller for Frank & Louise <br />Wottaw, who bought the house in 1926. Mr. Wottaw was the district <br />manager for the Ben Hur Insurance Company. Mr. Wottaw lived <br />here until his death in 1955, at which time his daughter, Anita <br />Boswell, inherited the house. She married Howard Boswell, a <br />salesman from Fort Wayne in 1925. Mrs. Boswell lived in the house <br />until her death in 1977. <br />Page 18 <br />
