Douglas Alan Gibson
1025 Hudson Avenue
South Bend, IN 46616
(574)-233-3626 douglas.gibsonra`comcast.net
November 1, 2004
Historic Preservation Commission
Of South Bend and St. Joseph County
125 South Lafayette Boulevard
South Bend, IN 46601-1830
Dear Mrs. Hostetler and Miss Schulte:
Last August, I approached the Commission and received approval for the renovation/restoration of my
1917 Arts and Crafts Bungalow. I am happy to report the exterior remodel of the home is complete. I
would like to thank you for taking the time to come and visit my home and to see the outcome of countless
hours of "sweat equity." Now that the exterior work is finished, I have a beautiful. historic home situated
amidst a landscape that is less than appealing. I am glad you were able to seethe visual challenges around
me, including the alley and rental property, both across the street. The enclosed proposed site plan will
provide solutions to these, and other, landscape challenges. Therefore, it is my pleasure to present you with
plans for the landscape of my home.
Mr. Robert J. Odynski, of Foegley Landscape inc., prepared the proposed landscape plan for the home.
The plans were derived from Mr. Odynski's experience as a landscape architect, drives around the
historical district, and from multiple resources, including but not limited to: Outside the Bungalow
America's Arts & Crafts Garden, by Paul Duchscherer and Douglas Keister; American Bungalow Style, by
Robert Winter and Alexander Vertikoff; Front Yard Gardens Growing More Than Grass, by Liz Primeau,
and Ortho's All About Shrubs and Hedges, by Penelope O'Sullivan. ^
I will continue to work with landscape architect, Robert Odynski, until the project is completed. Related to
the time of year, the project will be completed as soon as the Certificate of Appropriateness is obtained.
Once again, I am very excited to submit these plans to you and the Historic Preservation Commission.
Please review the plans carefully and contact either myself or Mr. Odynski, of Foegley Landscape inc.,
with any questions. I look forward to attending the meeting to obtain the Certificate of Appropriateness.
Thank you for your time and thoughtful consideration. -
Sincerely,
Douglas Alan Gibs
Robert J.
