O TH g
Fra
SOUTH BENDoo
°
LL
-
PARKS & RECREATION
\`--
DEPARTMENT
1865 '
Stephen J. Luecke, Mayor
To: Historical Preservation
Superintendent
From: Brent Thompson
Phillip L. St. Clair -_
City Forester
299-4765
Date: October 18, 2004
Administrative Direct or:2:
Betsy Harriman
RE: 742 Sancome
235-5596
The Silver maple in the back yard at 742 Sancome is showing signs of
Director of Marketing
decline. The tree has some larger dead limbs and a thinning crown
Mark Bradley
with soil compaction in the root zone. In my opinion the tree will die
299-4765
within five to seven years without treatment.
Silver maples when mature become very large in trunk size. This
ance Superintendent c
species also has fast internal decay. Silver maples have a lot of surface
ichael zkiewicz ' . _
235-9941414
. roots. They have very vigorous growth which leads to branch failure
due to heavy branch ends and weak wood.
Forester Treatment to try and save the tree would be radial trenching within the,
Brent Thompson root zone. Radial trenching is an excavation of root soil in a spoke like
299-4768 exc.249 pattern with the trunk as the hub. The trenches would be 10" to 14"
deep and 8" to 10" wide. The trench would be filled back with
Recreation Director Mycrhiza Fungi, Rhizosphere Bacteria, and Terra -Sorb hydro gel
Susan O'Connor mixed with organic layers, such as woodchips or compost. At times
299-4765 this is difficult for a back yard with other landscaped areas.
Zoo Director Treatment may be costly and not 100% effective. Other
.Greg Bockheim recommendations would be to deadwood all the large limbs for safety
235-5549 purposes and making sure to provide deep adequate moisture during
dry periods.
Fiscal Officer If you have any other questions or concerns, please feel free to call me
Bill Carleton at (574)299-4768 ext. 249.
299-4765
Director of Golf
Chad Kilmer
271-9180
321 East Walter Street • South Bend, Indiana 46614 • 574-299-4765 • TDD 235-5567
Parks Administration Fax 299-4783 9 Recreation Fax 299-4784
