Cornelius O'Brien Conference and Main Street <br />Madison Indiana <br />October 28-30 <br />Friday October 29, 2004 <br />Division of Historic Preservation and Archaeology, National Register of Historic <br />Places Workshop: Jon C. Smith and Patrick Andrus <br />The main focus was an introduction to what the National Register is and exactly <br />what it does. Mr. Andrus highlighted the use of the Bulletins and the Centralized <br />Archives. He also stressed the use of more complete documentation of the <br />significance of the sites and not just emphasizing the genealogy of the owners. <br />Topics of interest were the period of significance doesn't change for the districts, i.e. <br />if a NR district comes in with a period of significance of 1954 a 1964 building in the <br />area doesn't comply in 2010. Evolving evaluation issues continue to be residing and <br />"bricking up". There is a 60 -day comment period on the use of digital photos on <br />black and white paper versus the use of black and white photos and the required 75 - <br />year life span. <br />Saturday, October 30 <br />Selling Your One -Of -A -Kind Community with Amy Mac Donell Shepard, Deborah <br />Doyle-Schechtman and Curt Cottle This was a "how to" session on marketing <br />your town or city. The great cautionary tale is not to be something your never were. <br />Play to your strengths and natural highlights and history -but don't create <br />something that was never there. How to design effective regional cultural and <br />recreational info publications featuring local artists and products and/or foodstuffs. <br />Also discussed Heritage Tourism -the real America. This would be wonderful for <br />our Community Development. <br />Working With Indiana -Small Business Development Center. How They Can Help <br />Your Downtown Businesses with Amy MacDonell Shepard, Mary Jane Gonzales <br />and Linda Wood <br />Another workshop that would have been ideal for Community Development. <br />Resources discussed were Small Business Loan Fund and the Micro Enterprise <br />Loans and what services can be provided as well as training programs. Nxlevel <br />Entrepreneurial Training Programs and incubator programs for local products, <br />produce and people. <br />
