Tree decline above ground is due to problems below ground.
The decline may not be noticeable -until long after the problem has
begun below ground. The most serious damage is to the root system.
by soil compaction or changes in grade. Construction fences should be
erected around trees that are to remain. The fence should be placed to
the tree drip line or as far away from the trunk as possible. If the
damage is predicted to be soil compaction, a 6-12" laver of course
wood chills on the landscape surface can very effectively prevent soil
compaction. Construction mulching is a temporary measure and
cannot be left in place for a prolonged period of time, The mulch nitist
be removed carefully so as not to damage the trees root system.
Most trees have a spreading pancake shaped root system, the majority
of which is within 18" of the soil surface. On large, mature trees "vitil
room to grow, the roots may grow twice as far as the tree crown.
Diseases of mature trees results from slowly developing imbalances
between the crown and the roots.
Cutting roots creates sites of entry for soil borne pathogens, furtlier
reduces the trees already limited capability to take up nutrients and
water and risk reducing stability of the tree. For trees measuring 12'
in diameter or larger, soil excavation work or root cutting should not
occur closer than the distance measured by the trunk circumference o I'
the tree, or a maximum distance of 6 ft, whichever is less. Steil
excavation work may be done closer than the distance parameters
established under the above category, provided all excavation soil is
accomplished by hand shovel or auger and no roots greater than 2-3,"
in diameter are severed.
