As a homeowner in the area, my husband
and
I are very concerned about the impact on the area, both from a wildlife and a
historic perspective.
Our home and property is next to the old meatpacking plant and the abandoned
railroad bed on Roosevelt Road. One of the things we love about our
"homestead" is the little bit of history we've been able to discover. The area
was once
known as Nutwood, and apparently the depot was across the street from our
place. The building is gone, but I'm sure the foundation is still present.
Nutwood
also boasted a small grocery store and a post office, as well as a few
dwellings. We have an old foundation in our front yard that was the foundation
of
the home of one of our neighbors (I believe it was built in the 1920s).
In addition, the home at the corner of Locust and Roosevelt was apparently
one of the summer homes of the Studebakers, and they had a small summer camp a
little further west on Roosevelt.
While the history of our little Nutwood isn't well-known, what we have been
able to discover has made it very dear to us. We truly hope the group studying
the routes will choose a path other than Alternate C.
If you are able to give us any updates on what the commission discovers or
decides, we would appreciate it very much.
Thank you for your time,
Beth and Ken Riches
21271 Roosevelt Road
South Bend, IN 46614
574-231-8604
Luvrte66@aol.com
TWIG 2.7.7
http://webmail.michiana.orglindex.php3?&twigjession--aOlo3A8%3AOlo7Bs%3A7%3A'lo22mailb(119104
