Hammond -Nash, Director
RESOLUTION
OF THE
HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION
OF
SOUTH BEND & ST, JOSEPH COUNTY
At a special meeting held Saturday, January 10, 2004, the Historic Preservation Commission of
South Bend & St. Joseph County, having received information from the Northern Regional Of-
fice of Historic Landmarks Foundation, and the Wythougan Valley Historic Preservation Coun-
cil and having had the opportunity to look at and consider the historic properties in question,
Upon a Motion made by &A 007-Pell-rr , seconded by JQA14ti S o r (e a Qom, and
carried by a vote of -7-0 resolved as follows:
1) The cluster of historic structures including the White family cemetery and farmstead, the
William Gronawalt farmstead, and the Hattie and Henry Zentz farmstead, all located near the
intersection of Maple Roads and East 2C Road, in Marshall County, just South of St. Joseph
County, has irreplaceable historic value;
2) The citizens of Northern Indiana generally will benefit if a route can be found for US 31
through Marshal County which does not entail the loss of these or comparable historic re-
sources;
3) We are informed, and believe from the data available regarding the different proposed routes,
that the use of the former Vandalia Railroad right-of-way through Marshall County will best
preserve the known significant historic resources of our sister county, and will allow connec-
tion to a reasonable route through St. Joseph County.
4) For these reasons, we resolve to communicate our support for all reasonable efforts to pre-
serve the cluster of historic structures and sites around Maple Road and East 2C Road, in
Marshall County, and we request that favorable consideration be given to the use of the old
Vandalia Railroad right-of-way for the new US 31 route through Marshall County.
Respectfully Submitted, Submitted,
'),  r /
1"T
Virginia O'Hair,
Secretary
COMMISSIONERS
Mary Jane Chase Virginia O'Hair (Secretary) Gerald Ujdak (Vice President)
Martha Choitz Lynn A.
