County and the
Northern Regional Office of Historic Landmarks Foundation of Indiana have identified
numerous historically significant structures that are in the area affected by the proposed
U.S. 31 project in St. Joseph. County.
2) Those properties identified and referred to above clearly have great value in their
representation of the culture and early settlement of St. Joseph County and the City of `
South Bend and would be a tremendous loss not only to the region, but also the -State of
Indiana if they were compromised in any way.
3) As a sister county to St. Joseph, Marshall County not only shares a border, but also a clear
historic connection in that the state's first commissioned road, the Michigan Road, links
our counties and has along its' route, many historic properties representing early
settlement. The Michigan Road is in most cases, current U.S. 31 in parts of Marshall and
most of St. Joseph County. Therefore we share the responsibility of protecting properties
representing the early settlement and culture of our region.
For the reasons stated above, we wish to communicate our full support of the findings and
recommendations of the Historic Preservation Commission of South Bend & St. Joseph County,
to Witt: Of the present routes, route ,E -s is to be preferred over the other proposals under
consideration, particularly from Madison Road north, because it would entail the least
loss of historic and cultural resources
Respectfully submitted,
Attest:
Darin Rettinger, Tereassa Welborn,
Secretary President
