The
purchase became final June 6, 1925. Mr. Mooren was a partner in the Mooren Brothers wholesale fruit
business. After 20 years, the Moorens sold the house to Mary and Alvin Melser (a salesman) in 1945. The
melsers did live in the home at least a year, but in 1947, leased it to Lucile and Adolf Strandhagen, who
eventually purchased the house outright in 1951.
Dr. Strandhagen, born in Pennsylvania in 1914, held a doctorate in applied mechanics from the
University of Michigan, and had been a research physicist for the National Defense Research Council from
1942 to 1946. In 1946, he moved to South Bend to become a professor of engineering science and chair of the
engineering department at Notre Dame. He was also associate editor of the Journal of Vehicle Dynamics and
consultant to the US Navy Mine Defense Lab. He and his wife lived at 611 Edgewater until his death in 1992.
Shortly thereafter Mrs. Strandhagen sold the house to Roland Kelly. Ms. Mallozzi became the owner
sometime after 1997.
While this Colonial Revival house has been maintained in good condition, the full -width front porch
has had some major alterations from its historic or original appearance. The front porch has been enclosed,
and narrow single pane windows installed there, and aluminum storm windows added.
APPLICATION ITEMS:
1. The fence proposed is behind the-fi,"t wall of the house, and is more than 50% open. Thus, its
'design is consistent with the historic district landscape design generally. The material proposed is
not historic. Staff recommends approval, on the condition that the installation not cause
harm or damage to the adjacent neighbors' fences or structures.
4. This door would be on the main entrance to the house, which is, however, not on the front face, but
on the northwest side. Staff recommends approval, on condition that the new door be
consistent in style with either the existing front storm/screen door, or with the original
service door on the garage.
caj" ^t(v, a cc 9T-li VM)' 6)ed Te4,IC,, Opt -n SfiOn WM
b.0 kr'" TV 6 -t-
