Hammond-Nash,Director
.Tuesday, July 27, 200
The following arc my comments regarding the Studebaker Corridor:Environmental kev:'.ew:
l,),The whole site is eligible for the National R-gister though itis currently not listed as an
:hlstorlc dilt;ta.
2.) At this point in time, the preservation and reusability of all ofthe, buildings on the Plant
#2 site inay not be entirely#1casib.1c,
a. The buildings constructed mainly with steel, (the foundry) though architecturally
significant and intcreW:-ig in their oven right, are. difficult to reuse as they would
be difficult to fire proot. These are r.lso easier to demolish than the reinforced
concrete structures.
b. The foundry building still retains sortie notable interior features important to in-
dustrial archeology, such as the huge furnaces. The portions of the build:.ng con-
structed with reinforced t=crete could be retained. 1-he cedar block flooring hay
probably absorbed many pollutants.
3.) The buildings that are structurally sound should be retained and properly maintained,par-
titularly the reinforced concrete buildings and portions of buildings.
a- The 1•luckins building i,-. in fine condition. The roof appears to be in good repair.
The smaller size of"the building is such that the building could be market.-d as is,
b. South Bend Lathe is monstrous but structurally sound as it was constructed with
reinforced conortto. It could itself houso its own ind-amial park. Some fart of
the building could be rcuacd. My comment is limited regarding this building, as I
have not seen the mteri(jr.
c. The high bay of the foursdry buildinV, is architecturally'notable and relatively
sound.,The Studebaker `.`S" on the b•iilding retains strong ties of association to
the aut.omvtivc corporation. These ties would be broken by the salvage ofthe"S"
logo without the retention of the building itself.
Respectfully submitted,
Joann 5rleder
Architectural Historian
c.,cy:HussrorvErrs
Ntur'yJurtu t haAz t Virginia Cy'Hxi;(Secretary) Gerald Ujdak
Martliu choi'm Lynn A.Partia):(vice President
thcrinc HvatcticrTroaaurci ) Doom,wr stopites
( ) Joann Sprlerlcr(pchitcc:tural Hiswr.:an) John t.ivineston(Lesal Gounarl)
