JOHN OXIAN: The committee agreed with the choice of this lamp style, more or less.
DLZ has also researched and recommended a gas induction bulb for proposed light
fixture.
KAREN HAMMOND -NASH: Governor Kernan forwarded our letter regarding US31 to
the MOT commissioners with a request that they include HPC comments in their
environmental impact statement. Other written correspondence is from the Wythougan
Valley Historic Preservation Committee. (See copy of letter)
Regarding the I &M garage on La Salle, we received communication from the
tenant that they are only using about a third of the parking available. Lack of maintenance
has caused some concrete deterioration. They owners and the tenants may not want to
maintain.
JOHN OXIAN: Several years ago we wrote them a letter opposing what they did to this
building. They created the situation when they took the windows and the doors out of
that building and allowed the inside of the building to be exposed to the outside weather.
Commission members had a brief discussion regarding the condition of the building.
John Oxian asked Karen to send a letter to the owner about the condition of the building.
The commission also agreed to support any grant applications that can be obtained to
help repair the building.
4. Downtown South Bend Neighborhood Relations Committee.
Lynn Patrick and Julie Schutte briefly informed commission members about the recent
City Plan meetings and the South Bend Neighborhood Relations Committee.
5. Legal Report: Chapin Park proposed Local Historic District
(Combined with item number one, Chapin Park proposed local district)
IV. OLD BUSINESS
A. Eddy Street road widening; affect on East Washington National Register
Historic District; request opinion.
The commission members and Christopher Waidner discussed the impact the widening of
Eddy Street would have upon the East Washington National Register District, specifically
on 1028 East Colfax, 125 Eddy and 107 Eddy. The Commission asked if the widening of
Eddy Street could be reduced to lessen the impact on these structures. Mr. Waidner stated
that federal standards applied to this project and to the design of the travel and turn lanes.
Mr. Waidner asked if Commission members recalled if Eddy Street been paved with
brick. The Commission recalled that Eddy Street had been brick and mentioned the
bricks could be salvaged for the repair of other brick streets. Commission members felt
traffic safety should be addressed at these intersections but at what price to the properties
located in the project area.
B. Committee Appointments
(See enclosed copy of Committee Appointments in meeting packet)
V. NEW BUSINESS
7
