sl
9n
0 Since the completion of
the Studebaker /Oliver
Plow Works Redev-
elopment Strategy in 1999 the
City of South Bend and the
South Bend Redevelopment
Commission have taken major
steps to implement the Strategy.
These activities have in-
cluded Phase I and Phase II
Environmental Assessments and
securing more than $6 million
in funding for the project.
In March 2002 the South
Bend Redevelopment
Commission acquired
title to the former Oliver
property, acquiring it from
Allied Products Corporation as
part of Allied's bankruptcy re-
organization. The Revelopment
Commission also acquired
Allied's former stamping plant
on South Franklin Street as part
of the same transaction. These
two properties contain more than
2.5 million square feet in
approximately 40 buildings,
located on more than 75 acres.
This acquisition is significantly
larger than any project in the
community to date. (For example,
the Uniroyal project in Mish-
awaka only contained 1.7 million
square feet on 43 acres.) When
added to the demolition of the
Avanti, Tmnswestem, Standard
Surplus and South Bend Ware-
house buildings (a total of
1,247,430 square feet) that took
place during the last decade, it
will mean that the City of South
Bend will have purchased and
demolished more than 3.7 million
square feet of former Stude -baker
and Oliver buildings since 1991.
I" The Studebaker /Oliver
project is an extreme-
ly ambitious one —
anticipated to take 10 -15 years
to complete. When complete
the City will see the benefit of
returning more than 120 acres
of industrial land to productive
use, increasing the tax base
and bringing new jobs and
private investment into the
area.
1940'.
