Some sessions are specifically designed for
commission chairs aad new commission members'.
The DHPA encourages I all staff and members of Indiana's ' local historic .' preservation
commissions to attend the Forum. Funding for
scholarships is being provided by the DHPA and Historic Landmarks Foundation through the -
Indiana Alliance of Historic District Commissions (IAHDC): For information about scholarships
to attend the Forum, visit the IAHDC's website at http://pages.prodigy.net/hlrmro/'or call
Dana Groves at 574- 232 -4534.
Cornelius O'Brien Conference on Historic Preservation
October 28-30,2004 in Madison
This year, the Cornelius O'Brien Conference on Historic Preservation will be combined with the
Indiana Main Street Conference for the first time. This combined conference model has been
used with great success in a number of other states and has several distinct advantages'. By
hosting a larger event, better rates can be secured from hotels and venues, keeping conference
costs down. A larger pool of attendees will lead to greater networking opportunities as
preservationists and Main Street staff engage in face -to -face dialog. Finally, the conference will
address a broader range of topics, giving attendees more session choices. The combined
conference is intended to meet the specific needs of both the Main Street and preservation
communities while allowing for greater interaction between these groups.
Madison, one of the first three experimental Main Street communities in the nation, and its
magnificent collection of historic resources will be the setting for this event. Local historic
landmarks will be featured as venues for most sessions. 2004 marks the 36` annual O'Brien
Conference and the 18` annual Main Street Conference.
Don't forget to make reservations early because Madison is a busy place during the fall color
season! For more information about the combined conference, contact the DHPA at 317 -232-
1646 or visit the conference website at www. conferences .indiana.edu /obrien2004.
Remember ... in CLG communities, a majority of local commission members
must attend at least one informational or educational meeting each year.
Participation in these educational programs will meet this requirement.
